摘要

Arguments over macro演化 versus micro演化 have waxed and waned through most of the twentieth century. Initially, paleontologists and other 演化ary biologists advanced a variety of non-Darwinian 演化ary processes as explanations for patterns found in the fossil record, emphasizing macro演化 as a source of morphologic novelty. Later, paleontologists, from Simpson to Gould, Stanley, and others, accepted the primacy of 自然選擇 but argued that rapid speciation produced a discontinuity between micro- and macro演化. This second phase emphasizes the sorting of innovations between 物種. Other discontinuities appear in the persistence of trends (differential success of 物種 within clades), including 物種 sorting, in the differential success between clades and in the origination and establishment of 演化ary novelties.
