摘要
Neutralism and selectionism are extremes of an explanatory spectrum for understanding patterns of molecular 演化 and the 湧現 of 演化ary innovation. Although recent 基因組-scale data from 蛋白質-coding genes argue against neutralism, molecular engineering and 蛋白質 演化 data argue that neutral 突變s and 突變al robustness are important for 演化ary innovation. Here I propose a reconciliation in which neutral 突變s prepare the ground for later 演化ary 適應. Key to this perspective is an explicit understanding of molecular phenotypes that has only become accessible in recent years.
