摘要

Optimization has been shown to be a driving force for the 演化 of some 生物 structures, such as 神經 maps in the 大腦 or transport 網絡s. Here we show that insect 網絡s also display characteristic traits of optimality. By using a graph representation of the chamber organization of termite nests and a disordered lattice model, it is found that these spatial nests are close to a 滲流 threshold. This suggests that termites build efficient systems of galleries spanning most of the nest volume at low cost. The 演化ary consequences are outlined.
