摘要
A great deal is understood about how a 病毒 infects an individual cell and manages to replicate. Patterns of 疾病 progression in plant and animal hosts, such as 病毒 titers and the appearance of symptoms, have also been described in great detail. On other hand, very little is known about what is happening at the intermediate levels during 病毒 infection. Here, we use flow cytometry, a technique to rapidly measure large numbers of individual cells, to quantify the number of cells infected by a plant 病毒, in different leaves and at different times. We found that few cells become infected, and only one or two 病毒 particles typically initiated cellular infection. Moreover, 病毒es from an infected cell will infect only one or two other cells. Therefore, although 病毒es replicate at astronomical rates within
