摘要

In contrast with animal communication systems, 多樣性 is characteristic of almost every aspect of human 語言. 語言s variously employ tones, clicks, or manual signs to signal differences in meaning; some 語言s lack the noun-verb distinction (e.g., Straits Salish), whereas others have a proliferation of fine-grained syntactic categories (e.g., Tzeltal); and some 語言s do without morphology (e.g., Mandarin), while others pack a whole sentence into a single word (e.g., Cayuga). A challenge for 演化ary biology is to reconcile the 多樣性 of 語言s with the high degree of 生物 uniformity of their speakers. Here, we model processes of 語言 change and geographical dispersion and find a consistent pressure for flexible learning, irrespective of the 語言 being spoken.
