摘要
Human 語言s evolve by a process of descent with modification in which parent 語言s give rise to daughter 語言s over time and in a manner that mimics the 演化 of 生物 物種. Descent with modification is just one of many parallels between 生物 and linguistic 演化 that, taken together, offer up a Darwinian perspective on how 語言s evolve. Combined with 統計 methods borrowed from 演化ary biology, this Darwinian perspective has brought new opportunities to the study of the 演化 of human 語言s. These include the 統計 inference of 系統發育 trees of 語言s, the study of how linguistic traits evolve over thousands of years of 語言 change, the reconstruction of ancestral or proto-語言s, and using 語言 change to date historical events.
