摘要

突變 is fundamental to 演化, because it generates the 遺傳 variation on which selection can act. In nature, 遺傳 changes often increase the 突變 rate in systems that range from 病毒es and 細菌 to human tumors. Such an increase promotes the accumulation of frequent deleterious or neutral alleles, but it can also increase the chances that a 族群 acquires rare beneficial alleles. Here, we study how up to 100-fold increases in Escherichia coli's genomic 突變 rate affect adaptive 演化. To do so, we evolved multiple replicate 族群s of asexual E. coli strains engineered to have four different 突變 rates for 3000 generations in the laboratory. We measured the ability of evolved 族群s to grow in their original environment and in more than 90 novel chemical environments. In addition, we subjected the 族群s to whole 基因組 族群 sequ
