摘要

集體行為 provides a framework for understanding how the actions and properties of groups emerge from the way individuals generate and share 資訊. In humans, 資訊 flows were initially shaped by 自然選擇 yet are increasingly structured by emerging communication technologies. Our larger, more complex 社會 網絡s now transfer high-fidelity 資訊 over vast distances at low cost. The digital age and the rise of 社會 media have accelerated changes to our 社會 systems, with poorly understood functional consequences. This gap in our knowledge represents a principal challenge to scientific progress, democracy, and actions to address global crises. We argue that the study of 集體行為 must rise to a “crisis discipline” just as medicine, conservation, and 氣候 science have, with a focus on providing actionable insight to policymake
